Tokenizing EVE Online's MMORPG Economy with Blockchain

Jeremy Thomas
Recently, I came across a Twitter post on a16z’s investment in EVE Online game. I was quite surprised but did expect EVE Online to enter the web3 industry with its amazing player owned and controlled in-game economy.

This is a blog I wrote with the help of GPT. Objective of this blog is to give props to EVE Online game and how the metaverse infrastructure can be utilized by Massive Multiplayer Online games to monetize the game economy with tokens.

EVE Online is a Space based Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

EVE Online is a space-based MMORPG that lets players explore, trade, fight and cooperate in a vast and complex galaxy. The game has one of the largest and most realistic virtual economies in gaming history, with over 360,000 players participating in various activities and professions.

Since 2018, 50 million EVE players have manufactured over 276 billion items and engaged in some of the biggest and most expensive wars in games history (ex. the Guinness World Record-holding M2-XFE battle where 3k+ spaceships worth over $378k were destroyed). And on top of this economy, the EVE community has built a rich ecosystem of third-party tools and apps supported by an API, showing that there is great interest among players to participate and collaborate in building virtual universes.
The economy of EVE Online is based on supply and demand, with players producing and consuming goods and services that have real value.

The game has its own currency, called ISK (Interstellar Kredits), which can be used to buy items, ships, skills, insurance and more. The game also has a sophisticated market system that allows players to trade with each other across different regions and solar systems.

Free World Economy Controlled By The Players

The economy of EVE Online is not controlled by the developers or any central authority. Instead, it is driven by the actions and decisions of the players themselves.

The game features a dynamic environment that changes according to player behavior, such as wars, alliances, piracy, exploration and events. The game also has a dedicated economist who monitors and analyzes the economic data and trends of the game world.

EVE Online has been praised for its realistic and immersive economy that creates meaningful choices and consequences for the players. The game has also been recognized as one of the most influential examples of emergent gameplay and social interaction in gaming history.

However, despite its success and innovation, EVE Online still faces some limitations and challenges as a virtual economy.

For example:

  • The game relies on centralized servers that can be vulnerable to downtime or attacks.
  • The game does not allow players to own or create their own assets or content outside of the predefined rules and options.
  • The game does not have a direct connection or integration with real-world economies or currencies.
  • The game does not have a clear legal framework or protection for intellectual property rights or disputes.

These limitations could be overcome if EVE Online transitions to become a Metaverse game - a persistent virtual world that transcends physical boundaries and connects with other digital platforms.

One possible way to achieve this is by hosting every part of the game on the blockchain - a decentralized ledger that records transactions securely and transparently.

By using blockchain technology, EVE Online could:

  • Enhance its security and scalability by distributing its data across multiple nodes instead of relying on centralized servers.
  • Empower its players by allowing them to own their own assets or content as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can be verified and traded across different platforms.
  • Bridge its economy with real-world economies by enabling players to exchange ISK for cryptocurrencies or fiat currencies through smart contracts or decentralized exchanges.
  • Establish its legal framework by using smart contracts to enforce rules and resolve disputes automatically.

By becoming a Metaverse game powered by blockchain technology, EVE Online could take its virtual economy to the next level and create new opportunities for innovation and value creation for its players and developers alike.
